St Lucia is the second largest of the Windward Islands Group - only Dominica is bigger - volcano St.Lucia is 27 miles long and 14 miles wide with beaches of black and golden sand, hot sulphur springs, a scenic mountain range and rich, fertile soil. Its best known feature are the twin peaks, Gros Piton and Petit Piton.
The centre of the island is dominated by a mountainous landscape carpeted with lush vegetation. More than 1,000 feet above sea level, the cool rainforest covers a large part of the island`s interior and southern areas, with a series of stunning waterfalls. Because of this the drive from the International Airport in the very south of the island to the more developed north-western part of the island where most of the Resort Hotels are located can take up to 2 hours. To compensate though, you do get to see the rainforest up close and the large areas given over to banana plantations with the bunches encased in blue cacoons.
Soufrière volcano is dormant - there has been no volcanic activity on the island since 1766, but vents hydrogen-sulphide (rotten eggs) and is best known to be what is said to be the only drive-in volcano.
North of the capital Castries lies the main tourist area, and it was here on Rodney Bay that we stayed all inclusive at the St.Lucian by Rex Resorts. http://www.rexresorts.com/_home/index.asp Expectations are everything. Expect 5 star and you will be disappointed, but with spotless rooms, linen and towels changed daily, hot well-prepared local and international food buffet and the all the drink you want, it cannot be faulted. Add to this one of the best beaches on the island with golden sand and lapped by the warm Caribbean and you could not ask for more. Our Holiday was arranged by Tropical Sky, who did an excellent job.
