Croatia
Croatia, is of course, part of the old Yugoslavia.  A very chequered history of conquest and conflict includes the assassination  of Austria`s Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914 which precipitated the First World War.  In 1929 the old territorial units including Croatia were abolished, replaced by regions and the Country was renamed Yugoslavia.  In 1945 Croatia became one of the six constituent republics of Yugoslavia under the new presidnet and Communist Party Leader, Josip Broz, better known at Tito.
With his death in 1980, his legacy of a united country disintegrated resulting in the conflict that was the war against the Serb-occupied area of Western Slovenia.  With peace restored in the 1990`s the Country entered its present peaceful state and is even hopeful of being admitted to the EU, but Brussels has made it clear that Croatia must give full co-operation with the UN war crimes tribunal and facilitate the refugee return process.  In the meantime, tourism is driving the economy and Croatia is once again seen as a desirable, albeit adventurous, destination.
We visited the Dalmation Coast mid-way between Split and Dubrovnik at a resort called Makarska.  Hemmed in by the Mountains to the east and the Adriatic sea to the west, it really is a sun-trap with its own micro climate, and even in October when we went the termperature was in the mid to upper 70`s during the day, with clear blue skies.  I can thoroughly recommend the excursion by traditional-style boat to the offshore Islands of Hvar and Brac.
